A lot of things already happened in Dr. Shaun Murphy's life in The Good Doctor season 3, especially when it comes to his romantic relationships. Shaun and Carly have broken up, as she suspects him being more deeply attached to Lea.

In this week's episode of The Good Doctor season 3, titled "Autopsy," Shaun will have a big moment with Lea. Lead star Freddie Highmore, who plays Shaun, also teased what will happen to his character and Lea in the future after this episode.

Based on some promotional materials, Shaun will confess his feeling to Lea, but their conversation may go in a different direction. She already broke his heart before, so one of the questions now is whether or not the situation would be different this time.

There's a chance Lea would act in a different way than the usual, or that Shaun's confession may lead to some unexpected twists and turns. Speaking to TV Insider, Highmore has something to say about this particular subject and that the result of his confession might be shocking to some.

The actor told the publication that he's proud of the confession scene. However, he revealed that there is a "horrible truth" towards the ends of the episode. Highmore noted that even though it's not entirely conclusive, he's hoping that whatever happens here would surprise fans.

Shaun's complicated feelings have been one of the major elements of The Good Doctor season 3. His relationship with Carly is being challenged most of the time. But, his relationship with Lea is different since they share a deeper emotional intimacy.

Although Shaun and Carly have broken up, that doesn't mean he'll pursue Lea immediately. He's probably afraid to tell her what he feels because he's afraid to ruin their friendship. He had his heartbroken by her, so he's probably scared she would reject him again.

In addition, things could get more complicated now that Lea is working at the hospital. It may get awkward between Carly, Shaun, and Lea, as they're going to see each other -- that's inevitable. This could be hard for all of them, especially for Shaun as this may impact his professional life as well.

Meanwhile, Highmore directed the upcoming episode and this allowed him to dive more into his character's complicated love life. The actor knows what needs to be done, largely because he played Shaun over the past years and knows what's necessary for the character's plot.

The Good Doctor season 3 drops its new episodes every Monday on ABC.
