Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's lengthy statement about their Megxit deal, reportedly, showed their unhappiness with the agreement. From the banning of using their Sussex Royal branding to keeping their patronages, one royal expert believed they ignored Canadian rules with what they said.
The Sussexes revealed the details of their royal exit, which would be effective on March 31. However, in the section where they talked about the possibility of continuously using the word royal, Canadian royal expert Patricia Treble claimed that they "conveniently ignored the country" that they are now living in.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle claimed that they could continue using the word royal in their branding abroad, saying "there is not any jurisdiction by the monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word royal overseas." However, it seemed like they already accepted the condition and would not use the term.
Treble explained that the country the Sussexes chose to stay has some rules to follow when it comes to using the name that has a connection with the Crown. In her column for the Canadian news website Macleans.ca, she wrote that under the Canadian law, the applicant should have federal government permission where the word royal is "used as a prefix in a corporate name and where it suggests royal patronage."
Although Prince Harry is the sixth in line to the throne, Treble insisted that it is not enough to use the royal moniker for their non-profit. She, then, outlined the guidelines the state of Ontario issued. Although the Duke of Sussex lives in British Colombia with Meghan Markle and their son, it also has the same rules.
A name that has a connection with the Crown, the Royal Family, or an endorsement by the Crown or Royal Family will only be accepted with written consent from the appropriate authority. However, this rule doesn't apply to names with geographical locations or references to New Westminster as the Royal City and words that don't have a connection with the Crown or the Royal Family.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, on the other hand, noticed the unhappiness of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle over their Megxit deal in their statement. He found them quite bitter about the restrictions being placed as they detailed the royal agreement after they stepped down as senior members of the Royal Family, Mirror Online noted. He even said that the lengthy statement was a telltale sign of their hostility.
