There is still some confusion about what exactly the new Candyman movie is. Although it is believed to be a reboot that will introduce a new Candyman, there are also reports stating that the Jordan Peele-produced film is actually a direct sequel to the 1992 flick. So is it possible that it's a little bit of both? The trailer for the upcoming horror movie has just teased at its shocking connection to the classic film.

The trailer for Candyman opens with the lead character Anthony played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II explaining the urban legend to his girlfriend (Teyonah Parris). "Legend is, if you say his name five times while looking into a mirror, he appears in the reflection and kills you," he says. Naturally, she isn't impressed. "Who would do that?" she wonders.

It isn't long before the trailer presents a few people who would do that. The scene shows a group of teens standing in front of the mirror in the girl's restroom where they begin chanting, "Candyman." After the name is repeated five times, there is silence that is disrupted by another girl going into the bathroom. Although the teens believe that it is safe, things immediately go awry.

Interestingly, Anthony appears to be truly intrigued about the legend of Candyman. Having moved to Cabrini-Green, the original housing project where the first movie took place, he becomes obsessed with the villain. However, there could be a different reason why Anthony simply couldn't let the idea go. The synopsis for Candyman reveals that Anthony actually has a huge connection to the 1992 flick.

In the synopsis, it is revealed that Anthony's full name is Anthony McCoy. This is the name of the baby that was supposed to be sacrificed to Candyman in the original film but was ultimately saved by Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen). Sadly, it looks like Anthony is drawn to the same place where he almost died. But could this mean that you can't truly walk away from your past?

Candyman is originally based on the short story The Forbidden that was written by Clive Barker. The sequel is directed by Nia DaCosta and will bring back Vanessa A. Williams as Anthony's mother Anne-Marie McCoy as well as Tony Todd as the original Candyman. Helen Lyle is also set to return in the movie although she will be played a different actress Cassie Kramer. The film is scheduled for release on June 12.
