It cannot be denied that Queen Elizabeth had a rough start this year. After Prince Andrew stepped down from his royal duties last year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed 2020 by stepping back as senior royals. Two royal divorces then followed these departures. With everything Her Majesty is going through, she, fortunately, has someone who she can continuously rely on in the monarchy.
There are predictions that 2020 can be considered Her Majesty's second annus horribilis. She has been in a lot of turbulent times before the year ends and at the beginning of it. There are even assumptions that the worse is about to come to the royal family.
But despite everything that Queen Elizabeth II has to go through, she can always rely on her husband, Prince Philip. Although the Duke of Edinburgh is already retired and spends most of his time in Sandringham, his wife knows that she can still count on him.
According to Express, the monarch describes her better half of almost 73 years as "her constant strength" and someone she can always rely on. The two got married in November 1947 and remains on each other's side since then.
In her appearance on Lorraine in July 2016, royal expert Katie Nicholl talked about Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's marriage. She said that the former British army is her rock until today. She also often calls him her "constant strength and stay."
"[She had] a very innocent, protected childhood but a very, very lovely one," she said. "One that has been at the root of her because family is - and always has been - very, very important."
Nicholl added that Prince Philip is the only person that can say no to Queen Elizabeth. Philip is said to have a habit of watching television on maximum volume, which his wife doesn't like. So, she will ask him to turn the volume down, to which he will tell her to "shut up" in a proper way. Just like other relationships, they also have simple arguments like this.
The Sun reported that Queen Elizabeth was only 13 years old when he met Prince Philip, who was already 18. At the time, she got struck by his then-future husband's "Viking" good looks and sportsmanship.
Nicholl also brushed on the topic of Queen Elizabeth's parenting style. There were assumptions that she was cold to her kids, but she explained that it was just because of the "generational difference" and the royal duties that she had to perform all over the world when her children were still young.
