Christopher Lloyd will be stopping by as a guest star in one of the episodes of NCIS season 17. The Back to the Future legend will be appearing in the hit CBS series this spring. He will be playing the role of Joe Smith, a 95-year-old former Navy sailor. The character served on the USS Arizona when it was attacked at Pearl Harbor back in 1941.
According to TVLine, Smith is determined to have his ashes laid to rest with his fellow sailors when he dies. But then, he becomes the unexpected focus of the investigation in one of the episodes of NCIS season 17. Gibbs and the team are reluctant and not sure if they can actually believe him, given that his story is bizarre to them.
There are no further details about Lloyd's character, aside from the fact that he wanted to put his ashes to rest alongside his fellow sailor. He's likely determined to make this happen as it would define a good percentage of his life. However, the team isn't really sure about it, so viewers have to wait for how his story will be explored once his episode arrives.
Aside from his role as Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown in Back to the Future franchise, Lloyd also starred as Rev. Jim Ignatowski in the comedy series Taxi. In 1992, he also made an Emmy history after winning Best Dramatic Actor for Disney's Road to Avonlea. His most recent TV appearances include NBC's A.P. Bio, ABC's Roseanne revival, and Syfy's 12 Monkeys.
There is no official release date for Lloyd's episode as of yet, and the series has been off-air for a couple of weeks now. The show is set to come back next week, with an episode titled "In a Nutshell." Within this episode, the team will be investigating the death of a Navy officer. He was murdered the same way as his parents' decades ago, which is a mystery for the team.
While doing an investigation, they come across a storage container and they were shocked as it was filled with dollhouses display the recreations of the murder scenes. The serial killer properly planned the murders, so the team needs to make a thorough investigation. Also, the episode will see the team cleaning out their personal spaces, but some of them were having a hard time letting go of their possessions.
NCIS season 17 returns on Tuesday night, Mar. 10, on CBS.
