Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dreamed of a pairing that will end the struggles of his side so Bruno Fernandes was brought in last January and the move appears to be paying off. The Red Devils are winning, and Solskjaer is hoping that when Paul Pogba returns, more magic will explode.
The plan is to get the club's "best players playing together," with the signing of the 25-year-old Fernandes. Already, the Portugal international has netted three goals and considered instrumental in the wins pocketed by United in the past few games.
The hiring is proving a hit, and getting him playing with Pogba and the two doing wonders on the pitch would be great, Solskjaer admitted.
"You look at our squad and you want the best players playing together ... You have a hope that we get to the stage where we really challenge for the league," Goal reported the manager as saying.
His vision of the two deployed at the same time is of a United that will continue the tradition of winning "by playing convincing, attacking, free-flowing football with flair."
The Norwegian said: "We want to consistently keep winning games like Manchester United teams do."
Surely, the other half of that dream is playing out as intended. The entry of Fernandes fired up the Red Devils to successive victories and the latest of which was against Manchester City. The latest addition is proving he is both a contributor and a leader.
Fernandes coming to the team mid-season also showed his ability to hit it off and work well with new teammates, somehow indicating that Solskjaer's plan might just come into fruition. As the boss suggested: He wants the best of the team to work together and produce results.
It is a wonder, however, if Pogba is up to the task. Per Metro, the Frenchman has been limited by injury woes and the last time he played was December last year. He is expected to report back to work real soon, but it's a suspect if the Pogba of the old will be seen.
Speculations are rife part of Pogba's long absence was due to an intention to move out of Old Trafford, which was confirmed by his agent Mino Raiola. The latter said elite clubs have been expressing interest on Pogba, who might be convinced working with Fernandes at United is not alluring anymore.
That seems understandable as offers are supposedly on the table. Real Madrid, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain are knocking and laying down tempting offers, which could more powerful invites for Pogba than the prospect of winning games for United and teaming up with Fernandes.
"It is unclear if Pogba will be at United to form a long-lasting partnership with Fernandes, with transfer speculation still swirling around the playmaker," said the same report from Metro.
