Meghan Markle has been known as an advocate of women's rights even before her acting years. Since then, she always makes sure to put feminism in front of all her works.
This is why it is not surprising that she focused her speech on this matter last Friday when she went out for a solo engagement in London. It is also worth noting that her visit marks the celebration of the International Women's Day, which was dated on Sunday.
According to Harper's Bazaar, the Duchess of Sussex's engagement was a "surprise visit" at the Robert Clack Upper School. About 700 students did not know who their "guest" was until Meghan Markle arrived.
The reports also noted that the royal spearheaded a "special assembly" to impart the importance of women empowerment. She was joined by Geraldine Dear, who is a very popular citizen of Dagenham for her efforts in sparking the talks of equal pay between men and women in 1968. Accordingly, their visit to the school was also said to mark the 50th anniversary of Britain's Equal Pay Act.
The Duchess of Sussex primarily talked about the things that happened about the legislation and what truly sparked the discussions. She said that Geraldine Dear and her group, who all went on strike more than five decades ago, is the "best example" of "no matter what gender you are," you will always have a "voice" and the "right to speak up."
Meghan Markle then reportedly ensured to target her speech not only for the "women." She was also said to address her statements to the teenage boys present in the room. The Duchess shared that the International Women's Day is not only for women but, rather, "it is all about us."
In a similar report made by Variety, it was revealed that the Duchess of Sussex had several photo ops with the students. It was noted that they all did the "equal sign" for their poses considering that this year's International Women's Day's theme was "#EachforEqual."
Meghan Markle also reportedly went on to tour the campus. She met some of the students and had a brief talk with them.
It was shared that some of these students were working on projects to mark the upcoming Women's Day. The Duchess also engaged with some of the members of the school's debate society.
Meghan's visit to the school served as her final solo engagement as the working Duchess of Sussex. Her following engagements will be joint events, wherein she will be accompanied by the Duke of Sussex.
