No league titles will be handed out because the football season has been cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, which essentially was the message sent out by UEFA. The governing body said the priority for Premier League, for instance, is to complete the season and not to rush which team will win the title.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin made clear that there were no recommendations made to void the season and declare the leading club as league winner. In the case of Liverpool, which is estimated to be just six points away from clinching the crown, Ceferin said there is no assurance that scrapping the season will make the team win its first league crown.
The goal set by UEFA is to wrap up the league seasons in the usual fashion. As far as he is concerned, there is no proposal to make league leaders outright champions, Ceferin said.
Speculations are rife that since Liverpool enjoys a 25-point lead over the nearest club, which is Manchester City, the Jurgen Klopp's side will be declared the winner in the event the season games were halted for good.
According to The Sun, UEFA branded the circulating stories as fake news and the body added that a plan is now in place to finish all the remaining matches and for the Premier League campaigns to end on June 30.
"I've saw and heard some again fake news that UEFA will advise leagues to finish the championships now and decide that the winners are the ones who are number one now. I can say that it's not true," Ceferin was reported as saying.
"Our goal is to finish the leagues and we didn't recommend anything like that to any association or league," the UEFA chief stressed.
In the same way, La Liga will operate using the same guidance from UEFA. That is why Spanish football head Luis Rubiales issued a confirmation that if the games were not completed by the deadline set, the league leader, Barcelona or Real Madrid, will not get the crown.
Rubiales said: "The 2019-20 season has to end with the same rules and not change, although the situation is exceptional."
For his part, Klopp said he is supportive of the move to suspend the games in light of the spreading COVID-19 infection, saying in times of emergency football will be the least of important things.
"I've said before that football always seems the most important of the least important things. Today, football and football matches really aren't important at all," the Express reported the German boss as saying.
Klopp added that when it comes down to "a choice between football and the good of the wider society," then the decision is easy.
