Southeast Asian countries are seeing spikes in new coronavirus cases as governments ramp up testing and lockdowns are enhanced in some regions to prevent further community-spreading, especially in areas with confirmed CoVID-19 cases.
Thailand New Cases at 122
On Monday, Thai Public Health Ministry spokesman Taweesin Wisanuyothin revealed that there are 122 new cases in Thailand, with 20 of the patients confirmed to have links to previous cases in the country, the Bangkok Post reported.
While 92 of the new confirmed cases in Thailand are still waiting for more details on how they got infected with the novel virus, 10 of the cases were imported, Taweesin revealed.
668 people who previously tested positive of the CoVID-19 strain are still receiving treatment in medical facilities, while 52 patients were discharged after full recovery. Experts said the spike in new cases may be due to more widespread testing being implemented.
Six Health Providers in Indonesia Succumb to CoVID-19
The Indonesian Doctors Association revealed on Sunday that six doctors have succumbed to the novel virus while they were on the frontline, the Jakarta Globe reported.
Health experts noted that the rising number of frontliners dying from CoVID-19 infection entails what appears to be a trend suggesting the fatality rate is moving at a fast pace among those who are considered "high-risk" of contracting the disease.
Thailand now has a total of 514 confirmed coronavirus cases, with 64 new cases being recorded on Sunday. 10 more people died, bringing the country's total death toll to 48.
Philippines' CoVID-19 Toll Nearly at 400
On Monday, the Philippine Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that the country now has a total of 396 cases. The DOH further revealed that eight more people died from the disease, bringing the country's total death toll to 33, ABS-CBN News reported.
Sunday saw the biggest spike in new cases in the Philippines as 77 new cases were detected. The DOH warned that the number of cases in the country will rise further by Monday afternoon as more test results come out.
Singapore Records 18 New Imported Cases
The Singaporean government revealed on Sunday that the city-state recorded 18 new imported coronavirus cases and five domestically-transmitted cases.
According to Channel News Asia, the new cases bring Singapore's total CoVID-19 cases toll to 455. Despite the new cases, the city-state recorded a total of 144 recovered patients. The said patients have been discharged.
On the other hand, there are 14 patients in critical care, and 309 others are still being treated in medical facilities. Singapore also recorded its first two deaths on Saturday.
Malaysia Reports 11th Death
Malaysia on Monday confirmed its 11th CoVID-19 death. The patient was a 70-year-old man who had a travel history in Indonesia last month. He was admitted at the UKM's Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Hospital, the Malay Mail reported.
After his coronavirus diagnosis on March 19, he was placed on intensive care and since then, his health deteriorated. Case 1,070 in Malaysia and the country's 11th death, the patient was the chairman of his local surau (Islamic assembly) in Kuala Lumpur's Cheras.
Malaysia now has a total of 1,306 confirmed coronavirus cases as of Sunday afternoon.
Cambodia's New Cases Come from a Touring Cluster
Late Sunday night, the Cambodian Health Ministry reported 31 new CoVID-19 cases in Sihanoukville, coming from a cluster of French tourists who visited a coastal town.
The French group was made up of 36 people, wherein two of them tested positive on Saturday and 29 others were confirmed to have contracted the novel virus on Sunday. Two Cambodians who were the tour guides also got infected.
The new cluster marks a repeatinging trend in Asian countries after earlier CoVID-19 clusters were linked to a religious sect in South Korea, and a the recent massive cluster was linked to a tabligh conference in Malaysia.
Cambodia now has a total of 34 confirmed coronaviruses cases.
