Prince Charles is said to be very fond of Prince George, the first-born son of Prince William. Before Prince George was born, Prince Charles was apparently touted to become a doting and indulgent grandfather and it may be because of his non-existent relationship with his own grandpa, King George VI.
The Prince of Wales did not grow up to get to know King George VI as Queen Elizabeth's father died in 1952. Prince Charles was only three years old at that time and his only memory of King George was through photos.
Prince Charles also didn't know his grandfather on Prince Philip's side of the family since he died before the heir to the throne was born. The Prince of Wales, however, was very close to the Queen Mother. Reports stated that his relationship with her was even deeper than his relationship with Queen Elizabeth.
Interestingly, the Queen Mother said that Prince Charles has many similarities with her husband as a young man. Both of them were shy and both relied on the Queen Mother to help them come out of their shell.
Because he didn't have a relationship with his grandfathers, Prince Charles apparently vowed that he will be close to his grandkids. According to royal biographer Penny Junor, Prince Charles believes that his grandchildren must be encouraged and given attention as this was how he was raised by the Queen Mother.
But Prince Charles is not only close to his grandchildren in his own family. Apparently, he is also fond of the grandchildren of Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, who are his step-grandchildren.
In the documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70, Camilla shared just how great a grandfather Prince Charles is. Far from his public persona, the Prince of Wales apparently likes to read Harry Potter to his step-grandchildren and do different voices. He would also get down on his knees and play with the children for many hours.
Royal experts said that Prince Charles may likely be missing Prince George and his other grandchildren and step-grandchildren while he was in self-isolation due to the coronavirus. According to reports, the heir to the throne was able to speak with his sons, Prince William and Harry, via video conferencing while he was ordered by doctors to remain at home in Birkhall. Thus, he may have also gotten a glimpse of his grandkids and spoke with them through the video call.
