Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Outlander Season 5 Episodes 7 and 8 that may spoil your viewing experience. Read at your own risk.

Outlander fans were shocked by Murtagh Fitzgibbons' death in the recent episode of Season 5. However, it looks like it may not be the last time viewers will see Jamie Fraser's godfather.

Readers of the Outlander book series were stunned when Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) appeared in the third and succeeding seasons of the TV adaptation. This is because, in the book series, he died at the Battle of Culloden which was written in Vogayer, the third book in the Outlander series.

Murtagh's storyline in the TV adaptation is one of the biggest departures from the books. Outlander author Diana Gabaldon previously revealed that she was actually the one who suggested keeping Murtagh alive in the small-screen version.

In the previous Outlander Season 5 Episode 8, Jamie (Sam Hueghan) hunted down Murtagh as head of the Regulators. When they finally saw each other again on the pre-Revolutionary War battlefield, Murtagh was shot and killed by one of Jamie's men. He died of a fatal gunshot wound and left Jamie devastated.

Now that fans have seen Murtagh's death, will Lacroix still be able to reprise the role in any other character? This idea doesn't seem impossible in Outlander.

In Season 5 Episode 7, titled "The Ballad of Roger Mac," fans were surprised to watch the return of Graham McTavish but not as Dougal MacKenzie. He played the role of Buck Mackenzie this time around.

In an interview with Collider, Lacroix talked about his character. The actor said he first found out that Murtagh would die before they started filming the current installment. When asked whether or not Murtagh could ever make another comeback since the character has been optioned for six seasons or if he has the same fate as McTavish, Lacroix gave a rather intruguing response.

"I don't know about that!" he laughed in response.

Meanwhile, Outlander Season 5 will be taking a quick break this week and will air a brand new episode on April 12. In the upcoming Episode 8, titled "Famous Last Words," the Fraser family and Aunt Jocasta (Maria Kennedy Doyle) are mourning the deaths of Murtagh and Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin).

Towards the end of Episode 7, Roger appeared to have been hanged by a group of angry Regulators. In a teaser for the upcoming episode, Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) grants 5,000 acres to Briana (Sophie Shelton) apparently because of what happened to her husband. Roger doesn't seem to be dead as Bree is seen saying, "I don't need land, I need my husband back."

It also looks like an unwanted visitor arrives at the Fraser Ridge. Jamie is seen in the teaser ordering Claire (Caitriona Balfe) to take Briana's son to the cabin. Could it be the villainous Stephen Bonnet (Edward Speleers)?
