Unlike Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip does not always get the attention of the press and public because of his clothing and style. It is not surprising, though, as male royals do not get the same recognition as female royals in terms of their wardrobe choices.

While it is not an important matter to not be considered as a very stylish royal, there was an incident in the past when the Duke of Edinburgh was mistaken for somebody else because of his choice of clothing. As revealed, a former royal staff thought of him as a royal gardener because of "tatty clothes."

According to Express UK, the former royal staff was Darren McGrady. He served as the personal chef of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Princess Diana, Prince William, and Prince Harry for 15 years.

During his first day at the Balmoral Castle, he reportedly revealed that he met the Prince Consort that night. However, it was an event he did not expect.

He shared that an elderly man walked into the kitchen while he was minding his work. He described that this man was wearing "tatty clothes" due to his "green pullover." So, without hesitation, he assumed that this man was the royal gardener.

Darren McGrady continued to reveal that the elderly man he was referring to asked him where the chef is. Despite not knowing who he was, he answered that he will get the chef for him.

However, he was "mortified" after he heard the chef greeting the elderly man and referred to him as "your Royal Highness." He said that it was only at that moment when he realized that it was Prince Philip.

As per Cheat Sheet, though, the Duke of Edinburgh "had been an avid gardener." Royal expert, Russel Myers reportedly shared that the Prince Consort had been enjoying the routine for many years.

It was also revealed that he was able to grow black truffles and some rare black truffles "for the first time." He then claimed that no has done it yet in the United Kingdom until Prince Philip.

Aside from his gardening skills, the same publication noted that the royal was also one of the "best dressed" individuals in Britain. In fact, he even made it several times to some of the popular magazines' list of the best-dressed personalities in the country. So, while he may wear "tatty clothes" in the comfort of his home, he seemingly ensures to wear iconic styles when in public.
