Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, are celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary on Thursday, April 9. The Prince of Wales and his wife, however, will be spending their special day quite low-key.
To kickstart their simple anniversary celebration, Prince Charles and Camilla shared a photo of themselves with Camilla's two dogs, Bluebell and Beth. The royal couple confirmed that they are still holed up in Prince Charles' country estate in Birkhall because of the virus strain.
Prince Charles and Camilla have been staying in this Scotland country estate since March, when the government asked those in the vulnerable sector to limit their movements to protect against coronavirus. This is also where Prince Charles self-isolated and recovered after he tested positive for COVID-19.
Camilla was also in self-isolation in another part of the mansion for at least two weeks. In fact, it was just a few days ago that the Duchess of Cornwall was finally able to leave her room. She was reunited with her husband in time for their wedding anniversary.
While in Birkhall, Prince Charles and Camilla did not stop working. The Prince of Wales attended, albeit virtually, the opening of a new hospital in London that will specifically treat COVID-19 patients.
Camilla, on the other hand, made phone calls to her charity and talked to an 85-year-old woman who was also in self-isolation. They compared notes and even shared what books they were reading while they were not allowed to see family members.
Prince Charles and Camilla got married in 2005 in a civil ceremony at Windsor. Their union was followed by a blessing at the St. George's Chapel. Queen Elizabeth then hosted the wedding reception for 800 people at Windsor Castle.
The wedding was quite controversial because Prince Charles, the future king, was divorced from his first wife, Princess Diana. Camilla has been Prince Charles' lover for a very long time and the Princess of Wales blamed her for breaking up her marriage.
Following Princess Diana's death, Prince Charles and Camilla did not make their relationship public for several years, fearing that the public will be against them. However, over time, the sentiment for Prince Charles and Camilla's relationship shifted.
After their wedding ceremony and reception, Prince Charles and Camilla were sent off to their honeymoon in Birkhall by no less than Prince William and Prince Harry. The Queen even made an amusing toast for the newlyweds thus signalling her welcome for Camilla in the royal family.
