Governments across the globe are implementing strict lockdowns and quarantine guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19. Staying at home is the best way to keep everybody safe, but it does take away the time spent with family and closest friends.

Luckily, we're living in the age of social media, so video chatting is always an option for us not to miss out on what's happening. But things can be quite difficult for those not quite adept at using technology, like the elderly.

Most senior citizens have always struggled with using technology, but they need it now more than ever as it's the only way for them to connect with loved ones. It's a good thing some apps come with non-complicated UIs so the elderly can navigate through them with ease.

Messenger Lite

Messenger Lite is in many ways similar to the standard Messenger, but it has gotten rid of several extra features so users can focus on sending messages and video calls. You can still send videos and pictures in Messenger Lite, but extra features like threaded message replies and dark mode aren't available. Messenger Lite also doesn't have the floating chat bubble notifications that can be confusing for seniors.

FaceTime

Those already using iOS devices are pretty much familiar with FaceTime. It's the standard video chat app for iPhone, Mac, and iPad after all. It's the easiest app for people who already own an Apple device; however, note that FaceTime only works with Apple devices. If your contact isn't an Apple user, you'll have to choose something that works with Android phones, like Messenger Lite.

Oscar Senior

This last one isn't just a video chat app alone -- it's actually an entire digital care package aimed at people who lack knowledge with tech.

With Oscar Senior, not only will you be able to chat and make calls, but you can also track important care data. It even includes a mini OS designed to help the elderly keep in touch with family or their caregivers. Its UI is easy to use and everything is huge -- from texts to widgets. Making video games is as easy as picking up a telephone.

While the options above are free to use, Oscar Senior has several payment options and your grandma might need some help setting it up. But because the coronavirus is still among us, the app is currently being offered for free, but only for two months. Still, that's pretty much a good deal.
