Liam Hemsworth had a painful 2019, both physically and emotionally. He and ex-wife Miley Cyrus announced their split in August and he had a trip to the emergency room because of his supposed "healthy diet."

The Hunger Games actor revealed that he underwent surgery for a kidney stone a year ago because of his vegan diet. Hemsworth told Men's Health that it was a wake call for him and made him realize to reevaluate his life choices.

"I was vegan for almost four years. And then February of last year, I was feeling lethargic. I got a kidney stone. It was one of the most painful weeks of my life," the actor said.

Though Liam is okay now, he is not taking any chances. Liam said he made several changes in his life last year and one of those is his diet

He now eats fewer vegetables as he found out that, in his case, consuming too much could increase his risk of developing another stone. Liam said his risk of getting another kidney stone increases to 50 percent if he wouldn't reduce the contributing risk factor.

Hemsworth explained that his kidney stone was a calcium oxalate one which forms from having too much oxalate in his food intake. Oxalate is a naturally occurring substance, which is present in many vegetables such as spinach, beetroot, and potatoes as well as in almonds. When there is too much of this substance's waste product in urine, painful stones can develop.

The Independence Day: Resurgence actor revealed that back then, he was having five handfuls of spinach every morning along with almond milk, almond butter, and also some vegan protein in a smoothie. He considered it as a super healthy food intake for him at the time.

Liam added his painful ordeal last year made him realize that his so-called "healthy" diet may not be suitable for everyone. He said like a workout, the diet should also be tailored to fit the person's needs.

Meanwhile, The Last Song star also discussed the training he had for his new television show, The Most Dangerous Game. In the series, he plays the role of a runner who participated in a deadly game, hoping to win enough money for treatments for his terminal illness. Liam confessed that it was a brutal training but he learned a lot.
