Queen of the South season 5 may not be airing this summer on the USA Network. The series is one of the biggest shows airing every summer on the network, but that may not happen now because of the current global health crisis.

TVLine reported that filming was underway for Queen of the South season 5 at the time the production was halted due to COVID-19. In fact, most shows were forced to shut down filming as the health and safety of the cast and crew remain to be the top priority.

Before the outbreak, Queen of the South season 5 is expected to arrive in June 2020 on the USA Network. The preceding seasons arrived during that month, thus it only makes sense the fifth installment premieres around the same month. The new season is also expected to have 13 episodes as well.

However, since they stopped filming for a while, the release date of Queen of the South season 5 might be delayed. Yet, as per CarterMatt, there's still a chance the new installment may arrive in summer if ever USA Network opts to split the season into halves.

Still, the outlet noted that post-production will possibly be done in a way like the previous seasons. Right now, what viewers need to do is to wait, as there could be changes along the way. The cast and crew may start filming once again as soon as everything's clear up.

As for what stories we can expect in Queen of the South season 5, Alice Braga is back as Teresa Mendoza, a woman who was forced to run from the Mexican cartel and seeks refuge in the United States. Peter Gadiot's James Valdez will also have a vital role once the new season arrives.

Showrunner Ben Lobato said that James will have an important part moving forward. Teresa, in particular, will experience a "turning point" because of his presence. Also, the upcoming season follows Teresa making new deals, as well as new enemies.

It looks like the Russians will also have an important role in the latest installment. Back in season 4, Teresa informed her men she wanted to work with the Russian cartel from New York to expand her business, but her crew warned her it's a dangerous deal.

Still, Teresa proceeds because she wanted to establish a legitimate operation. A teaser of the upcoming season shows Teresa wearing a white suit and meeting Russian men, suggesting a potential business deal is along the way.
