The One Direction reunion could be one of the things that will uplift the spirit of many fans around the world during the coronavirus pandemic. As many artists have canceled concerts and performances, some members of 1D hinted at the possibility of a reunion this year. However, there is a slim chance that Directioners will see Zayn Malik on stage with his four ex-bandmates.

Harry Styles hinted earlier this month that the group might do an on-stage special performance soon. During an interview with SiriusXM, the "Adore You" singer was asked about the possibility of a 1D reuniting over a virtual social distancing-inspired performance. Harry replied that it wasn't the kind of reunion that the group is considering, suggesting that they are planning to perform together on stage again.

Then it was followed by an interview with Liam Payne. The singer confirmed that he and the rest of the group have been talking about their upcoming anniversary in July. Liam revealed that they have been working on several things but refused to divulge more details.

A few days later, Payne dropped another hint about the much-awaited reunion. During a recent Instagram Live stream with DJ Alesso, he hinted that Malik won't be part of the reunion and instead, invited the Swedish DJ to join the band in Zayn's place.

He said he has been constantly in touch with Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Harry Styles. In fact, he just spoke with Horan and they have been trying to have a group FaceTime with the other members.

"Most of us are in London. We've been trying to arrange the first group FaceTime at the moment. You can come and fill in for Zayn. Join the band!" Liam told DJ Alesso.

In another interview this week, Payne told Daily Star Online that he would understand if Malik won't join the 1D reunion. The " Midnight" singer said it is early to assume that Zayn will be part of the anniversary event despite the four members refollowing him on social media.

Liam said he thinks the "Pillowtalk" hitmakers don't enjoy being in the spotlight. This explains why despite releasing two albums and hit solo singles after leaving 1D in 2015, Zayn has only made a few public appearances and hasn't toured as a solo artist. Liam said they remember that Zayn told them a story that it was his mother who urged him to go to the X Factor audition even though he doesn't want to.

"That was literally what we saw all the way through One Direction...He likes to make songs and his songs do very well but at the same time he doesn't really like to go out and perform the songs," Liam added.

Malik left the group in 2015. The four remaining members of 1D eventually went into indefinite hiatus in late 2015 after they released their album, Made in the A.M.
