Fans of Arsenal and the Red Devils will surely rejoice by the thought of their clubs making the Champions League cut next season. It will only happen if the Premier League season will be canceled for qualification for the UCL, UEFA will use coefficient scores instead of table standings.
The proposal was made in a video conference of all 55 national football associations on the presumption that the domestic games in Europe will not resume and the season will be scrapped altogether. The idea is to make use of the UEFA coefficient instead of the scores that clubs have registered prior to the season suspension caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
According to Metro, the proposed qualification mechanism will see the Premier League Top 4 for the current season overhauled with only Liverpool and Manchester City surviving the UEFA coefficient system.
Top 4 clubs Chelsea and Leicester City will be relegated to the Europa League, and their places will be awarded to Manchester United and Arsenal, respectively occupying spots No. 5 and No. 9 when the league games were halted in early March.
City is not yet assured of a berth due to the two-year ban imposed by UEFA. If the decision will be finalized, the Pep Guardiola side will be booted out and Tottenham will take the club's space. And that would mean that the Wolves will be promoted to the Europa League competition.
The Sun said, and it is expected, that if the ruling is enforced, there will legal challenges coming from the clubs that will be impacted by the use of the UEFA coefficient.
Winning a spot in the Champions League is crucial to any team. Regarded as the most prestigious competition in Europe, football clubs greatly depend on the UEFA for their revenues. Playing in the UCL also makes clubs attractive to targeted signings.
For instance, it will be easier for Arsenal to convince Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to stay at the Emirates if the proposal will be implemented. The Gunners team captain has been wanting to play in the Champions League and is considering a switch in the summer to make that dream come true.
The same goes for United, which reportedly is on the brink of securing the signature of Borussia Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho. If the Red Devils are assured of competing in the UCL then Sancho has another sold reason to make his way to Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, in the same virtual conference by football officials, it has been decided that the Champions League and Europa League final matches will be played in August. However, the schedule will only apply if all domestic campaigns are completed by the end of July, according to BBC.
