Westworld season 4 is officially happening on HBO, but there have been concerns when it comes to its future. Some speculated that the upcoming installment may serve as the final one for the series. But, it looks like this is not the end and the show may continue further down the road.

Speaking to Variety, showrunner Jonathan Nolan has something to say about this matter and whether or not Westworld season 4 would be the final installment. He revealed they never talk loud about how many seasons the series would have, as things and circumstances change.

Nolan said that when they sat down to do the series, they didn't realize how difficult it would be to make it, as well as how many years it would take each season. Because of that, they never actually planned how many seasons Westworld would have.

The showrunner further revealed they didn't map out a specific number of seasons -- it's just the beginning, a middle, and an end. Hence, the upcoming Westworld season 4 may not serve as the final installment for the series and there could be a few seasons coming up in the future.

But according to CarterMatt, even though Westworld season 4 will not be the final installment, the series may not go on for another five or six seasons. It takes longer to make the show, and that probably puts some limitations on the episode count.

Meanwhile, when asked whether or not Evan Rachel Wood is leaving, Nolan said he's hoping the actress would not be departing from the series even though Dolores is gone. He noted that they haven't started talking publicly what the series would look like moving forward, but teased "it looks very different."

As for the potential release date of Westworld season 4, there are still questions when it comes to that matter. There are usually long hiatuses between seasons because of the effects and other stuff that the series needs to pull off.

For instance, it took about two years before the third installment came out, so that may happen for the next season as well. And because of the global health crisis right now, the arrival of the latest installment may further be delayed as well.

CarterMatt noted that the series may not start filming until next year. The real-life health crisis needs to be resolved first to make sure the condition is safe, and the cast and crew could begin filming. If ever, the new season may come out sometime in 2022.
