From the renovation of their Frogmore Cottage to their lavish royal wedding, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle cost the United Kingdom taxpayers a lot. The former member of the British Parliament and Privy Council Norman Baker revealed in an audit that the Sussexes spent a whopping $81.9 million of public money since they got married in 2018.
Norman Baker only estimated the figures but detailed how much did Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spend on different things. It includes their wedding cost, their security, and salary for their staff, among others.
According to Daily Mail, the staggering amount is like how much a Kardashian or a Middle Eastern Sheik's son normally spends. They spent $13 million for their security, $1.8 million for their travel and "the piece of de resistance," and $62 million for their wedding. Alternatively, Prince William and Kate Middleton only spent $37 million when they tied the knot in 2011.
In her two years in the monarchy, the Duchess of Sussex spent a total of 72 days on the job for Queen Elizabeth II and the U.K. Add to that the last four days of work she did before they officially stepped down as senior royals in March, then it would be a total of 76 days of employment.
So, if the total cost would be divided by the number of days she spent working, then Meghan Markle cost the U.K. taxpayers over $1 million a day. However, News.com.au cleared that these costs are associated with both Prince Harry and his wife. Alternatively, Prince William and Kate Middleton also cost the British public a lot when they got married and more when they started a family.
Meanwhile, as the British public demand Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to pay for the renovation of their Frogmore Cottage when they decided to leave the monarchy, they are now paying £18,000 or about $21,780 a month for their U.K. home. Mail on Sunday royal editor Emily Andrews revealed that the couple might continue to pay the monthly sum for up to 11 years.
In total, the taxpayers spent $3 million for the renovation of their property. The amount the Sussexes would be paying every month was said to be a "rental-plus agreement" that they would pay more than the commercial rate cost.
After Queen Elizabeth gifted Frogmore Cottage to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, it was renovated from five smaller residential units to a huge home for them. Although they are now living in Los Angeles, it will remain as their U.K. base.
