Another team has bowed out of the Willian race. Real Madrid has passed up the chance to sign the Brazilian this summer, even if the signing was for free. Like most clubs, Los Blancos are likely holding off on long-term commitments until the financial woes plaguing most teams improve in the coming months. With the COVID-19 pandemic far from resolved, that may take time.

Reports of Real Madrid passing on Willian comes from the Mirror. Aware that the Brazilian is seeking at least a three-year tenure, Real seems unready to grant that demand for now. But the strange thing about it is that they don't seem to mind the required price to maintain Willian per week. The 31-year-old is making $150,000 a week.

With Real out of the picture, the only teams interested in Willian are now Tottenham and Arsenal. But given that the two teams may also rethink giving him a long-term pact, it would not be surprising if the Spurs and the Gunners may also fold moving forward. The best recourse is a short-term (one-year deal at the least) to get Willian to their side. There could be provisions to extend that depending on his performance and if the financial landscape improves by next season.

On his part, Willian may end up staying in Chelsea after all. It is a possibility he does not appear to mind, although he branded it a temporary deal. That could be a one-year deal, buying the Blues and other teams time to reconsider a long-term deal. It will be recalled that the Blues did offer him a two-year deal. But this was one before the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning their stance may have changed. Even if it is still on the table, it will be interesting if Willian will now change his mind.

So far, only Willy Caballero and Olivier Giroud have settled their contracts with Chelsea. Both agreed to one-year extensions, and Willian is likely to be offered one too. The Brazilian is aware that most teams are unlikely to spend big by the next transfer window with budget constraints in play. He may have to lower his expectations a bit, at least until next season. Come next summer, he could revisit his demand for a long-term deal - whether this is with the Blues or teams who were previously ready to grant him a three-year contract.

For now, Willian will focus on finishing the current season with the Blues. He could sign a contract along the way, knowing other teams may not be willing to grant him his wish. It is a reality that he has to face for now due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
