Timo Werner is reportedly headed to Chelsea once the necessary paperwork is done to complete the deal. So far, RB Leipzig sporting director Oliver Mintzlaff, claims that the Blues have yet to formally make the deal official although he seems to accept the fact that the German is leaving after this summer. Mintzlaff had already said before the Werner had informed him that he was seeking a transfer after this season ends.

Regardless, Chelsea too everyone by surprise when they emerged the team that won in the Werner sweepstakes. It turns out that Frank Lampard led a secret delegation to Germany at some point to personally talk to the German striker. And it appears that the effort was all Chelsea needed to convince Werner to move to Stamford Bridge by next season.

But one team that curiously bowed out of the mix was Liverpool. The Reds were considered the frontrunners to land the services of Werner. However, it appears they were not spared from the financial crunch. No less than Jurgen Klopp admitted this was the case and that it was he who personally informed the German that Liverpool was bowing out of the race, Sky Sports reported.

Though they lost the opportunity to sign Werner, pundits feel it hardly affects their chances for the rest of the season. They do have a bumper crop of talented players leading the offensive. That includes Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Robert Firminho. Most felt Werner's talent would be put to waste had he joined The Reds. The only way to squeeze him in was if Klopp would adjust his plays to have all four attackers on the field at the same time. Rather than that, Klopp and the Reds opted for the easiest solution to the matter - pass on a Werner acquisition.

"There are a lot of good players on this planet," Klopp said. "Timo Werner is a great player, Kai Havertz is a great player."

Unless Liverpool plans to dislodge some players, they should be fine. Of the three players mentioned, only Firminho has been linked to transfer rumors. But considering the financial woes that all clubs are facing right now, moving to a new team that would need millions does not look feasible. There are exceptions but not all teams are likely to invest heavily from now until perhaps next season. Liverpool needs to finish what it started this season first. After that is done, it will be interesting if Klopp will continue his search for new talent to further bolster The Reds' current mix.
