Prince William is the second in the line of succession to the British throne. But considering the age of Prince Charles, who is the heir apparent to the throne, many believed that the Duke of Cambridge will be king sooner than expected.
While Prince William is embracing his future role these days, it wasn’t the case before at all. In fact, journalist Jeremy Paxman claimed that the Duke of Cambridge told his mother Princess Diana that he had no desire to become king. He would even suggest that Prince Harry should take the role, which the younger one fully accepted.
“We talked about our children, and [Princess Diana] said William often told her that he didn’t really want to be king, and then Harry would say, ‘If you don’t want the job I’ll have it,” he shared.
As a young boy, Prince William may have seen his future role as something that he couldn’t handle. Even though Princess Diana tried to give him and Prince Harry normal childhood experiences, their lives as members of the Royal family are certainly far from being average.
That being said, Prince William knew that being the King of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms is not an easy task. But despite not having any interest in being the monarch someday, Queen Elizabeth took the Duke of Cambridge under her wing to prepare him for his future role.
Fast forward to today, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton are two of the most popular and well-loved members of the Royal family. Even though the Duke of Cambridge wasn’t so keen on becoming King when he was younger, he’s fitting the role more and more each day.
Prince William and Kate Middleton have been ramping up their royal engagements during the coronavirus lockdown while Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles remain in isolation. Those who are over 70 are considered to be most at risk of catching severe COVID-19, so the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, being the future King and Queen consort, are taking over the obligations.
The royal couple is doing their duties virtually, and have been hosting and appearing in video calls numerous times. Prince William and Kate Middleton have a lot of pressure on their shoulders right now, but their efforts didn’t go unnoticed at all. In fact, royal fans have continuously praised the couple for their hard work.
