Twilight superstar Kristin Stewart is going to be the Princess of Wales in an upcoming movie about her divorce to Prince Charles. The film, titled Spencer, will be directed by Pablo Larraín and will start production by early 2021.
According to Deadline, the movie will cover the last three days before Princess Diana realizes that she cannot stay in her marriage to Prince Charles. It will take place in 1992 over Christmas in Sandringham with the rest of the royal family.
Larrain said that the heart of the movie will be the struggles of Princess Diana in her decision not to be the future queen. Describing her life an as upside down fairy tale, Spencer will show "a wider, bigger perspective of who she was." The movie will not depict the death of the princess.
The director also said that Stewart was picked for the part because she can play both the fragile and strong personalities of Princess Diana. Stewart apparently responded well to the script and intrigued the director over her approach to the character.
Royal family followers, however, do not think Stewart resembles the late princess. Some said that there are other actual British actresses who can take on the role better than Stewart.
Spencer has been written by Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders. The movie is expected to be added to the festival circuit next year, such as the Cannes Film Festival in France.
Princess Diana was married to Prince Charles from July 1981 to August 1996. Exactly a year later, the Princess of Wales died in a car crash in France as the paparazzi was chasing her.
Royal experts said that Prince Charles wanted to pull out of his wedding to the young Diana Spencer after realizing that they were not compatible. Princess Diana also found out about Prince Charles' true love, Camilla, now the Duchess of Cornwall, early in her marriage.
Over the years since her death, several actresses have played Princess Diana on the big and the small screen. The most famous actress to play the royal was Naomi Watts for a 2013 biography, Diana, which tracked the last two years of her life.
The upcoming fourth season of the Netflix drama series, The Crown, will also finally introduce Princess Diana. She will be played by Emma Corrin, whose take on the role was described as "incredibly accurate."
