There is little doubt that Bird Box was one of the biggest hits of 2018 that led to a particularly crazy viral challenge. However, it looks like the Netflix horror flick will be getting a sequel soon. Author Josh Malerman has confirmed that he is already writing a follow-up to his novel of the same name. In addition to that, he revealed that Netflix is already actively developing Bird Box 2.

Josh Malerman is the author who wrote Bird Box, which was adapted by Netflix and starred Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, John Malkovich, and Machine Gun Kelly. In the film, Bullock's character and her two children try to survive in a world infested with malevolent creatures that can make people go insane and kill themselves simply by looking at them. Luckily, the movie concluded with the lead characters surviving as they made their way into a forest where survivors have hidden in a former school for the blind. However, it looks like their story is far from over.

In an interview with Inverse, Josh Malerman confirmed that Netflix is already working on Bird Box 2, which will follow Sandra Bullock's Malorie. However, the writer was quick to point out that he couldn't share too many details about the sequel. "I can't say much, but I can say that it is in development," Malerman said. "Sometimes it's weird, all this secrecy, but I'm game."

It's understandable why Netflix would want to keep details about Bird Box 2 under wraps. After all, anything can happen to Malorie and the children, especially now that they are in a new place and will have to learn how to socialize with the other survivors. On the other hand, there's a huge possibility that the sequel will also adapt what will happen in Josh Malerman's follow-up to his first book. Luckily, the author revealed a bit more about the new novel which will be titled Malorie.

"Malorie opens at the school for the blind, which is where the movie ends," Malerman said. "Then it jumps a few years later, and it really takes off 10 years after that."

These details could confirm that Bird Box 2 will feature Malorie's experience at their new home but like the first film, it will be split between two different timelines. If this is so, fans can expect to see an older Malorie dealing with her children Tom and Olympia being teenagers. The sequel has not yet been given an official production start date or a release date.
