Up until now, there is no official word from USA Network about Dirty John season 3. There's no guarantee it's going to happen anytime soon, considering the uncertainties surrounding it. When it comes to the ratings, it's also clear that there's a concern here.
CarterMatt noted the second installment hasn't performed well, unlike the first season. Perhaps, this is because the anthology series was moved into another platform. Reportedly, the live numbers in both the 18-49 demographic and overall viewers dropped more than 40 percent from season 1.
On the positive note, there are still a lot of stories for Dirty John season 3, given that each season delivers its own stories with its own cast. Since it's an anthology series, it has the ability to refresh the story and make it interesting.
If ever renewed, the potential third installment will follow a completely different story with different cast members. The show reinvents itself each season, so the future chapters won't follow the storylines featured in the previous installments.
It also looks like showrunner Alexandra Cunningham already has an idea for the new season -- even though it wasn't yet renewed. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she revealed they'll be having a conversation about it very soon.
Cunningham explained Dirty John season 3 wouldn't be the same as the preceding seasons. She teased that the stories they've been talking about are "definitely different milieus than Orange/San Diego counties." Also, they consider their unifying principles to be love gone wrong and coercive control.
She said that the ultimate example of love gone wrong is familial. It is not necessarily about love, like romantic love, a couple, a boyfriend-girlfriend, or a married couple divorcing. It is more like a mother-child, or sibling.
Cunningham thinks that love gone wrong truly begins. She explained that the love coming from a parent isn't appropriate, twisted, or not real. It is one of the things that could contribute to people's future behavior. This is something they wanted to explore in the new season.
It's yet to be seen who could be the new cast in Dirty John season 3. But, the first season stars Connie Britton, Eric Bana, Juno Temple, and Julia Garner. Meanwhile, season 2 cast members include Amanda Peet, Christian Slater, and Rachel Keller.
