COVID-19 continues to infiltrate prison walls as a Texas correctional facility saw over half of its inmates infected with the fast-spreading disease that has killed thousands around the world.

Texas Prison Sees Over Half of Inmates Infected

The Federal Bureau of Prisons reported on Friday that of the 1,798 inmates at the Seagoville Federal Correctional Institution in Texas, a total of 1,072 inmates have tested COVID-19 positive.

The news came as Texas remains one of the latest hot spots of coronavirus outbreaks in the United States. The state has seen a spike in new cases both within prisons and outside correctional institutions.

As part of the efforts to hopefully control the virus from spreading further in prisons, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said it has been ramping up testing among asymptomatic patients.

Texas Hits Grim Milestone in Confirmed Cases

On Friday, Texas breached the 300,000-mark in confirmed coronavirus cases. The state logged over 10,000 confirmed new cases, bringing the national infection toll to 307,572.

The state now joins New York, California, and Florida in the group of U.S. states that reached over 300,000 confirmed infections. Furthermore, some experts are expecting more confirmed cases in the coming weeks if the uptrend continues.

Texas has gradually started reopening its economy over the past weeks but it appears that the economic boost is costing Texans' health and protection from COVID-19 as more positive results have come around since the reopening.

Florida Sees Fourth Straight Day with Over 100 Deaths

In Florida, the situation has not cooled down either. The state reported 128 new fatalities from the highly-infectious disease, bringing the national death toll to 4,805.

The new deaths marked the fourth consecutive day that Florida logged over 100 deaths from COVID-19. Aside from rising deaths and new daily cases in the state, hospitals have also started getting overwhelmed by the surge in hospitalizations.

Despite the data on Friday that indicated intensive care unit beds have reached nearly 120 percent in capacity, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said hospitals in the county "have the ability to add hundreds of ICU beds."

Gimenez went on to say that he hopes the steady rise of admissions from the novel coronavirus is a sign that COVID-19 cases in the country are finally peaking.

Curfew Imposed in Some Florida Counties

Meanwhile in Florida's Miami, local government officials announced a new curfew of 8 p.m. along the South Beach area as part of the efforts to reduce the number of new confirmed cases in the county.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Aileen Marty noted that Miami-Dade County is nearing the edge in terms of new infections, warning that a "full lockdown" has not be removed from the potential measures to be taken in worst-case scenarios.

Broward County has followed suit in imposing a curfew and it is expected that other Florida countries will take steps in preventing additional infections as the state continues to add over 10,000 cases daily.

Florida is the third hardest-hit state in all of the United States and as of Friday, the state logged a total of 327,241 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
