Fans of Kingdom are likely to wait much longer for the next season of the South Korean period horror series. Reports have it that Netflix will be doing the prequel of the series first instead of Kingdom Season 3.

Munhwa Ilbo reported that the prequel will star Jun Ji Hyun as Ah Shin, the mysterious character that was first introduced in Kingdom at the final episode of Season 2. The outlet cited a source from the series production, who claimed that the prequel would center around Ah Shin and how she became a warrior.

The insider said, at the moment, the stars of Kingdom are having some issues in filming the third installment due to scheduling conflicts. It added that Kingdom Season 3 could more likely come in two to three years because of this.

Apparently, this is the reason why series bosses decided to film the prequel first as it will be starred by different cast members. The Kingdom prequel will also, reportedly, be helmed by the series director himself, Kim Sung Hoon.

Munhwa Ilbo added that in telling Ah Shin's story, some characters in Kingdom Seasons 1 and 2, would likely to appear in the prequel. It cited Kim Sung Kyu's character, Yeong Shin, and claimed that his and Ah Shin's backstory could be fully explained in the prequel.

It could be recalled that Jun Ji Hyun only appeared towards the end of Season 2. It showed Crown Prince Lee Chang (Ju Ji Hoon) and physician Seo Bi (Bae Doo Na) finding out that someone from China is selling the Resurrection Flower to local Korean villagers.

They found the place as well as the new zombies, who have bells attached to their feet. This suggests that Ah Shin is spreading the virus on purpose and keeping some of the zombies and it wasn't explained why.

Meanwhile, Star News also reported that the Kingdom prequel won't be a multi-episode series. It claimed that it would be a 70-minute short film instead.

It added that people behind the production are already in the final stages of discussions about the prequel. They also, reportedly, set to kick off filming in October.

However, Netflix, allegedly, said otherwise. Korean news outlet, Joy News 24, quoted the streaming service as saying it hasn't decided yet on the future of Kingdom

It added that Netflix, also, hasn't confirmed whether or not there will be a prequel for the hit zombie apocalypse series. It claimed the network refused to confirm who among the remaining characters in Season 2 would return in Kingdom Season 3.
