Princess Diana and Prince Charles are proofs that even Royals, who people consider to have a picture-perfect life, also face marital problems. In fact, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ failed marriage was one of the most publicized scandals in the royal family history. The spouses eventually finalized their divorce in 1996 after over ten years of marriage.
Now, a report claimed that Princess Diana’s age had influenced her divorce from Prince Charles. The Princess of Wales was only 16 when she was introduced to the future King, who was dating her older sister Sarah at the time.
Prince Charles saw Princess Diana as someone who was “full of life,” and started to have an interest in her after he and Sarah split up. However, many speculated that the Prince of Wales was still in love with his ex-girlfriend Camilla.
After learning that Camilla had married someone else after he returned from his Navy service, Prince Charles considered Princess Diana as a potential bride. After dating very briefly, the future King proposed to Diana in 1981. She was 20 years old when they got married, and Prince Charles was 32.
Royal expert Sarah Bradford claimed in her documentary Princess Diana: In the Name of Love that Prince Charles said: “She is exquisitely pretty, a perfect poppy. But she is a child. She does not look old enough to be out of school, much less married.”
People have already been doubtful of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship in the beginning. But the Royal couple appeared to have settled well as husband and wife, especially when their beautiful sons arrived.
However, the fairytale didn’t last long when Princess Diana decided to divorce from Prince Charles. People started to point their fingers on who to blame for the end of the couple’s marriage. Many blamed the Prince of Wales for his romantic connection with Camilla Parker Bowles. Others blamed Camilla for ruining the Royal couple’s union.
But as for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, royal expert Robert Lacey previously said that they blamed their son for his disastrous marriage to Princess Diana.
Although weddings are supposed to be one of the happiest days of a person’s life, that wasn’t the case for Prince Charles as he had doubts and didn’t want to go through with it. He wanted to be with Camilla, but he also wanted the Crown, the latter appeared to be more important to him, so he married Princess Diana.
