Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, officially, stepped down from their senior royal roles at the end of March. But, just because they are no longer working royals, that does not mean that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would not speak out on causes that they are passionate about.

Even before she met Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was already an activist and a public speaker. In 2012, more than five years before she became a part of the Royal Family, the Duchess of Sussex joined USA Network's “Characters Unite: ‘I Won't Stand For’” campaign, and spoke about her struggles being a biracial woman.

With chaos erupting in the U.S. over the death of George Floyd at the hands of police brutality on May 25, Meghan Markle touched on this subject during a speech she gave to graduates at the Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles. Now, the Duchess of Sussex is under fire for her comments in support of the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, who works as a city councilor in Alice Springs, said that Meghan Markle was "a woman of great privilege" who is "completely removed from reality.” The local Aussie politician criticized the Duchess of Sussex for her decision to speak out about issues, such as the BLM movement.

"Her lending her voice to the Black Lives Matter movement is silencing the voices of those people in the communities who are vulnerable to black-on-black crime,” she said.

Protesters, celebrities, influencers, and more have been supporting the Black Lives Matter movement following the death of George Floyd in the hands of police officers. The 46-year-old black man died when his pleas that he couldn’t breathe were unheard.

George Floyd was just one of many black people who died and suffered in the hands of police. Many are convinced that the whole scenario had something to do with racism, and it caused a riot in the U.S. What started to be a protest on how cops mishandled the situation, quickly became chaotic when the protest descends into looting and destructive mayhem.

Meghan Markle then shared her “absolute devastation” about the death of George Floyd due to racial divisions. In a video message, the Duchess of Sussex shared what she felt with the whole thing. Although Prince Harry’s wife was worried if she'll say the right words, she was determined to speak out.

On June 1, The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, which counts Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as its president and vice-president, showed support to the Black Lives Matter campaign by sharing a powerful message on social media.
