Mark Harmon's Gibbs could evolve in NCIS season 18 and his relationship with some of the characters might change as well. In the upcoming installment, we could see him making small steps in being more open and discussing with others the things he's been through in the past.

In season 17 finale, Gibbs takes a look at his life before and shared with McGee some of the things that he experienced in the past. This could lead to something more entering NCIS season 18, considering that Harmon's character is not afraid to tell some of his stories.

This is a new side of him and it could further play out once the new installment arrives. One of the most notable moments in the previous season was when Gibbs confided on McGee after an emotional rollercoaster with war veteran Joe Smith.

It is a rare moment of vulnerability and wasn't always shown in the series. Executive producer Frank Cardea also told TV Insider that the character's changes will continue in NCIS season 18, noting that he's still a cowboy but no longer the "only cowboy."

Gibbs being more open to McGee is a sign that he is changing and their relationship could further develop. We could see some certain circumstances wherein the former will share more stories about his life before and that the latter is willing to listen.

But then, their personal moment is going to be situational and may not be explored while the two are in the middle of various investigations. Instead of having a lot of conversation about Gibbs' past, their relationship could likely progress in different ways.

It was originally planned that Delilah will be part at the end of the previous installment, but the series was cut short, McGee's wife is now set to appear in the early run of NCIS season 18. Hence, we could see Gibbs spending some time with McGee and his family.

Gibbs could also invite McGee to work with him and Fornell on the drug trade, which was first seen at the end of season 17. There are a lot of ways on how to explore their relationship and how it could lead to a greater bond. McGee understands Gibbs and that means he's willing to trust him more.

Meanwhile, NCIS season 18 is expected to premiere in the fall on CBS. However, due to the current global health crisis, nothing is certain right now. Cast and crew won't be able to start filming anytime soon because of the current situation.
