His Dark Materials season 2 will have shorter episodes compared to the first installment. The series opted to move into a different way because of several factors. Instead of having a total of eight episodes, the new season was cut short and will only be airing seven episodes.

During the Comic-Con @ Home, it was confirmed that His Dark Materials season 2 is coming on BBC and HBO with seven episodes rather than the originally planned eight-episode order. The series decided to move to this direction because of the global health crisis.

The good thing is that the cut episode isn't essential in moving forward with the second book The Subtle Knife. The story in this episode actually revolves around Lord Asriel, particularly what he was up to. This character will not be seen through most of the upcoming installment.

Since His Dark Materials season 2 was cut short, the unaired episode might be revisited at some point. But then, everything depends on whether or not it would be picked up for the third installment. Still, many believe the series will further continue since it is based on the trilogy fantasy novels by Phillip Pullman.

Meanwhile, executive producer Jane Tranter said that the adaptation of The Subtle Knife has been completed and the upcoming season would have a complete ending. She further teased that the story could make viewers more eager to have another installment down the road.

As for the story of His Dark Materials season 2, it would likely follow Lyra and Will together going on adventures and exploring different new worlds. We could also see Lee doing whatever he can to protect Lyra from the threats that have been following her.

Lyra dives deeper into the world of Dust as she continues searching for her father. Screenwriter Jack Thorne explained, during the Comic-Con that The Subtle Knife is a beautiful poem about trust, especially how the characters learn to trust again.

The trailer of the new season was also released, featuring Lyra and Will meeting in another world called Cittàgazze. The clip, also, introduced new characters John Parry, Mary Malone, and Ruta Skadi. It remains to be seen what could be their roles in Lyra's life.

The release date of His Dark Materials season 2 is not yet revealed as of this writing, but there's a plan for the series to return in fall on HBO. There is a huge chance it could premiere later this year, considering the entire season has been completed.
