Siren season 4 is not happening on Freeform, as the network canceled the mermaid drama series after three installments. Many were shocked by this announcement, especially since the season 3 finale left a huge cliffhanger and the possibility of more stories in the future.
Yet, Freeform confirmed there won't be Siren season 4, and the cancelation may have something to do with the ratings. Reportedly, the ratings of the third installment declined and this could be one of the reasons the network decided to end the series.
During its first season, the series proved to be a hit, with every episode drawing about 1.5 million viewers in delayed viewing. The mermaid drama is also the most-watched Freeform original in its second year on the network.
And even though the ratings declined in season 3, the series remains one of the most popular shows on Freeform. So, why did the network cancel Siren season 4? This move isn't actually new to them since they've already done in with Shadowhunters.
Aside from the ratings, the cancelation might be due to financial matters. CarterMatt noted that the mermaid drama is one of the most expensive shows due to its special effects and challenging shoots.
News about the cancelation came shortly after Freeform ordered additional seasons of Motherland: Fort Salem and Everything's Gonna Be Okay. Aside from the mermaid drama, the network also canceled Party of Five reboot back in April.
Now, the question is: will Siren season 4 happen elsewhere? Right now, there is no clear answer to that, but the show has a viable streaming partner in Hulu and has a lot of audience around the world. The streaming platform would be the prime candidate if ever the show would be picked up.
There are a lot of stories that needed to be addressed if Siren season 4 happens elsewhere. The season 3 finale featured an epic showdown between mermaids Ryn and Tia. But while the good triumphed over the evil, it didn't properly wrap up Ryn's story. Her daughter is safe, but Ben's whereabouts remain unknown.
Siren starred Alex Roe as Ben Pownall, Eline Powell as Ryn Fisher, Ian Verdun as Xander McClure, Fola Evans-Akingbola as Maddie Bishop, Sibongile Mlambo as Donna, Rena Owen as Helen Hawkins, Gil Birmingham as Dale Bishop, and Tiffany Lonsdale as Tia.
