Perry Mason season 2 is officially happening on HBO. While the renewal announcement is good news, there's uncertainty whether or not all cast members are coming back in the next installment. Considering the nature of the series, it's hard to speculate who's returning and not.

It remains unclear what Perry Mason season 2 would be all about, given that it was originally meant to be a limited series. Since the trial of Emily Dodson (Gayle Rankin) has concluded, the story will move forward in a different direction and may introduce new faces.

However, the stories of some characters in the previous installment were left open, including Sister Alice's (Tatiana Maslany) arc. There are a lot of things worth-exploring here, considering how season 1 ended for her. She is one of the most captivating characters, even though the story isn't all about her.

While the first season is more of an origin story for Mason (Matthew Rhys), there's something about Sister Alice's story needed to be addressed in the future. If she's going to be part of the next installment, we could see more evolution for her and a chance for her to transform.

Also, it seems like Maslany is interested to explore more things about her character in Perry Mason season 2. Speaking to Collider, the actress said Sister Alice is working to emancipate herself from everything that defined and controlled her before.

The actress explained that all of the markers of her character, including her identity, her mother, her faith, the church, and her connection to Emily are all stripped away. And because of everything that happened, she is forced to start again a new life.

Moreover, Rhys told the aforementioned outlet that there's a lot of room for Sister Alice to join the legal team now that she's a free agent. As for whether or not Maslany is coming back in Perry Mason season 2, executive producer Susan Downey didn't confirm what would be the character's future moving forward.

At the moment, no casting has been confirmed for the next season. But, Rhys will reprise his titular role, alongside Juliet Rylance (as Della) and Chris Chalk (Paul). The story could be all about Mason back in court, assisted by Della and Paul, and ready to fight justice.

Perry Mason season 2 hasn't started production yet and it is not expected to premiere until next year. The series is facing several filming challenges right now, with the global health crisis being the biggest one.
