Presidential candidate Joe Biden is maintaining his edge over incumbent U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the Democratic National Convention starting Monday, according to the latest national polls. The Republican National Convention is a week away.

Biden leads by nine points in the most recent Journal/NBC survey. Biden was ahead by 10 points in a CBS News survey of likely voters. Political news site and polling data aggregator RealClearPolitics' average of eligible voters put Biden ahead by almost eight points.

The latest figures reflect, in part, the Democratic presidential nominee's choice of running mate in Senator Kamala Harris, the polls suggest.

Data from weekend polling show half of those questioned would vote for Biden if the U.S. election were held immediately compared with 40 percent for Trump.

Biden is performing better than Trump in most areas, the polls show, including the ability to "rally the nation" with nearly half of those surveyed saying Biden is the ideal candidate. Trump scored 25 percent.

In race relations, surveys said Biden performed better with a 53 percent-29 percent margin. When it comes to handing the virus crisis Biden was a 49 percent-33 percent winner. However, Trump has 43 percent-39 percent edge in the effective handling of crime.

The 2020 electoral landscape looks promising for the Democrats. Survey numbers indicate Biden has a consistent advantage over Trump in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan and other important states.
