Right now, Conor McGregor is technically retired. Unless he says so, the chances of him returning to action remain unknown. Hence, all UFC fans can do right now is to keep tabs of what the Irishman is doing on social media. Now, there is a renewed belief that The Notorious could be making a cage return following his throwback photo on Instagram.

McGregor put up a post of him before he clashed with Nate Diaz. This was from four years ago, the rematch which he eventually won. The caption read: '4 years ago today! Backstage waiting to go out for one of the biggest bouts of my fighting life! McGregor/Diaz II Wow! Maybe there is more...'

McGregor retired for a third time recently. It came not long after he defeated Donald Cerrone in just 40 seconds over in Las Vegas. That appeared to show The Notorious back on track as far as his UFC career is concerned. But to his surprise, the former two-time UFC champion would retire again. This time, his reason was that the sport did not excite him anymore. But that has not stopped people from speculating about another MMA return.

Despite being retired, his name has often been mentioned in potential UFC matches. Another fight with Diaz or a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov has been suggested but nothing has gone beyond talk. Aside from those, there is the boxing rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. up in the air. The fact that UFC prexy Dana White claims he has been in communication with the undefeated retired boxer has gotten most to think that a fight with McGregor could be happening.

But White stressed that expecting such is wishful thinking. McGregor is retired and unless the Irishman says so, it will stay that way. Hence, this recent IG post could also be linked to a potentially seeing McGregor unretire yet again.

If the UFC sanctions a boxing match, a Mayweather vs. McGregor II makes the most sense if White is looking to make big bucks. If not McGregor, a boxing match featuring anyone on the UFC roster could also work. Nurmagomedov once showed his willingness to fight Mayweather and White could pull some strings.

With the world still dealing with the pandemic, a possible boxing match will stay in the air. The fact that fans cannot watch the fights up and close means no revenue coming from ticket sales. Hence, payouts are unlikely to be lucrative – a reality that may not draw out big names like Mayweather or McGregor.
