The Powerpuff Girls live-action series is, reportedly, in the works. The classic Cartoon Network animated show is said to be in development at The CW. The project will feature the adult versions of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup.
In the live-action version of The Powerpuff Girls, the three kindergarten girls are now "disillusioned twenty-something" adults who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. So, the question is: will Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup now that the world needs them more than ever?
Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier are, reportedly, writing the scripts. Also, Regnier executive produce alongside David Madden, Sarah Schechter, and Greg Berlanti via Berlanti Productions. Warner Bros. Television, on the other hand, will produce.
Currently, Regnier is under an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. Her past credit includes Veronica Mars revival, iZombie, SMILF, Sleepy Hollow, and Falling Skies. Meanwhile, Cody is known for her critically-acclaimed comedy feature Juno. Her other films include Young Adult and Jennifer's Body.
The original The Powerpuff Girls animated series is created by Craig McCracken. It follows a scientist named Professor Utonium, who accidentally creates the pint-sized superheroes consisting of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup after combining sugar, spice, and everything nice with the Chemical X.
The three all have superpowers and lived in the fictional city of Townsville, with their father Professor Utonium. The city's mayor frequently called them to help fight nearby criminals, as well as other villainous enemies using their powers.
The animated series ran for six seasons with 78 episodes between 1998 until 2005. In 2002, The Powerpuff Girls Movie was released, while the animated reboot aired on Cartoon Network in 2016. The most recent season wrapped up in June 2019.
For now, live-action is still in the early stage of development and some things could probably change. Since the series will follow the three superheroes as adults, the tone and theme of the story might be different from the animated version.
The cast hasn't been revealed, as well. It remains to be seen who's going to play Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. For now, viewers have to wait for further announcements. And, even if it will, indeed, happen on The CW, the series won't be arriving anytime soon.
Considering the current global health crisis, the potential cast members won't be able to start working anytime soon. Moreover, the scripts are needed to be done first. CarterMatt noted we could see potential The Powerpuff Girls live-action series in the fall of 2021, or after the pandemic.
