Britney Spears feels like she is a child after being under a conservatorship for the past 12 years. At 38, the Princess of Pop wants to stand on her own, not needing anyone's permission when she will make any decisions.
Britney is continuously fighting for her freedom, wanting to be out of her conservatorship, which has been taking effect since February 2008. A source told Us Weekly that she wants to be "her own person and not be treated" as a kid.
She took her first step to take control of her life when she requested the court to remove her father, Jamie Spears, as her conservator. Sadly, it was never granted, and the proceedings were moved to February 2021.
The Spears patriarch became her legal guardian after her public breakdown in 2007, followed by her divorce from Kevin Federline, to whom she has two kids -- Preston, 14, and Jayden, 13. He shared the role with attorney Andrew Wallet, who eventually resigned in March 2019.
Jamie, then, temporarily made Jodi Montgomery, Britney's manager, to be his daughter's conservator due to health issues. As her father wanted to be her protector again and bring back Wallet, she filed court documents to permanently remove him from the role and keep Montgomery instead.
A second insider told Us Britney became more "driven and hopeful" when Montgomery became her conservator. So, she took little steps to obtain the freedom she had wanted all along. However, a different source close to Jamie stressed that Montgomery was an "outsider" who had no knowledge about the extent of Britney's struggles.
Despite that, the hitmaker was never losing hope that her conservatorship would someday end. For now, she found comfort knowing that she had her fans and the public's support.
Meanwhile, Paris Hilton, also, felt like Britney was being treated like a child, The Sunday Times noted. Her heart broke for her friend, seeing a lot of people had been taking "so much control over her."
Hilton, Spears, and Lindsay Lohan were all seen together in the infamous photograph, where they squeezed themselves in the front seats of a car in 2006. Since then, the socialite had nothing but good words for the singer-songwriter.
Paris found the treatment of Spears unfair. She, too, could not imagine herself being a full-grown adult but being treated like a child.
Jamie would continue to be Britney's conservator until February 2021. Her fans earlier launched the online movement #FreeBritney to fight with her in her way to lobby her personal and professional freedom.
