Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their decision to step down as senior working royals earlier this year. Months after the "bombshell" announcement, they exited from the British Monarchy and flew to Canada.

The Sussex couple revealed that they want to live "financially independent" while serving the Queen and dividing their time between the United Kingdom and the United States. However, things did not, reportedly, go their way as they had to give up several things, like their statuses, titles, and opportunities to continue serving the British Monarch.

Royal author Omid Scobie revealed what the Duchess of Sussex told him before leaving for Canada. He wrote the details of the encounter in his and Carolyn Durand's latest book, Finding Freedom, according to the Daily Express.

On March 9, Meghan Markle concluded her last rounds of royal engagements upon attending the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey. Reports said, though, that she held a "private meeting" inside Buckingham Palace.

One of the attendees was Omid Scobie, who, later on, revealed in Finding Freedom that the Duchess of Sussex maximized the meeting to say her "emotional" piece. He claimed that the Duchess "hugged" him before saying, "It didn't have to be this way."

Reports said that Scobie has a "close" relationship with the Sussex couple. Despite the closeness, though, the Duke and Duchess have continued to deny their involvement with the royal author's book.

The authors, then, stated that they spoke to hundreds of sources who are close to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. One of these sources even alleged that the Duchess of Sussex "tearfully" opened up and said that she gave up her "entire life" for the British Royal Family.

Aside from the Duchess' final words, Finding Freedom also reveals Queen Elizabeth's "last words" to Prince Harry. A separate report from the Daily Express reported that Scobie and Durand's Sussex-centered book explains the details of what happened between the British Monarch and her grandson.

On March 1, the Queen and the Duke reportedly sat down for a "private lunch." Sources said that they decided to "take a break" and spend time together ahead of the Sussexes' exit later that month.

The grandmother of eight British Royals clarified to Prince Harry that she will always "support" his decisions and plans. The sources added, however, that Queen Elizabeth felt "very sad" that she will see Archie Harrison very little.

Despite feeling "upset" over the Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's decision, the Queen has since "accepted" their exit. She also told them that they will always be welcome to return.
