A select group of users are currently testing the new Facebook and Instagram feature that will allow them to cross-post stories on both platforms.
A new feature on Facebook and Instagram makes it possible for users to cross-post stories on both app. This functionality deepens the integration between the two social media networks and allows users to keep their accounts on both platforms healthy and active. Cross-posting Instagram stories to Facebook can help retain existing followers and gain new audiences.
According to The Verge, Facebook is currently testing its ability to display Instagram stories straight to Facebook. After the trial and if there is already a favorable result, the feature will be available to users of both social media giants.
Reports also revealed that for a long time, Facebook was making efforts to get Instagram users to cross-post their Instagram stories to Facebook. The ongoing test, which is available to a small group of users at present, is a testament to the expansion of those efforts.
A pop-up window on Facebook that explains the novel feature informs users that "now your followers can choose to view" your Instagram stories using Facebook. The company also stated that Instagram followers who have already linked their account to Facebook can turn on their viewing setting to allow them to see your Instagram stories on Facebook. However, Facebook users who are not following you on Instagram will not see the stories you posted.
You can easily identify stories if they are originally from Facebook or on Instagram. Facebook stories will reportedly have blue circles around them while Instagram stories will show the traditional orange and pink circles. Images of the visual distinction were first shared by @ecwife on Twitter.
Facebook has also emphasized that nothing has changed as to who can view your Instagram stories. The feature only gave your Instagram followers the ability to also see the same stories when they are using the Facebook app.
In a statement to social media consultant Matt Navarra, a spokesperson for Facebook confirmed the ongoing trial of the new feature. He said that the Instagram to Facebook stories cross-posting feature is purely opt-in and also respects the privacy settings of the user.
"We're testing a new feature that gives people the option to view stories from Instagram on Facebook, making it easier to view moments from people you care about, regardless of what app you're using. To see Instagram Stories on Facebook, people must have their accounts linked and opt into the experience. This feature respects all privacy settings, and people on Instagram can choose to not have their story visible on Facebook," the spokesperson said in a statement. The Facebook representative also confirmed the ongoing Instagram stories to Facebook cross-posting trial is limited to a select group and the company will listen to user feedback.
