9-1-1: Lone Star season 2 hasn't started production at the moment. Cast and crew weren't able to start working immediately because of the current global health crisis. But, the good thing is that Fox has been sharing some updates about what viewers can expect and who's new in the second installment.

In a recent report from TVLine, it was confirmed that Suits alum Gina Torres will be joining the cast of 9-1-1: Lone Star season 2 and she's going to be the newest series regular. The actress will be playing the role of Tommy Vega, a paramedic captain who's immensely impacted by the global health crisis.

In the official character description of Torres' character, Tommy was top of her game but she hung up her uniform to raise her twin daughters. But, she will re-enter the workforce to support her family after her husband's restaurant goes under.

The pandemic is a huge subject in 9-1-1: Lone Star season 2. Tommy plays a significant role in the show's sophomore year as it will tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though it breaks her heart to be away from her little girls, she wanted to show the world she's still the boss when she puts on her uniform.

Showrunner Tim Minear said they're excited to expand the series with the addition of Torres. He added that he's been dying to write for the actress again since Firefly, where Minear serves as writer and executive producer. He noted she brings "warmth, intelligence, and command to everything she does."

Meanwhile, the most recent show of Torres was the Suits spin-off, Pearson. She reprised her role as Jessica Pearson for 10 episodes. Also, the actress was set to lead ABC's vampire series, Bride, where she'll be playing one of Dracula's brides. However, the project didn't move past the pilot stage.

As for when 9-1-1: Lone Star season 2 could begin production, it is scheduled to start everything up in the fall. There are a lot of things that needed to be explored once filming officially kicks off, with the current global health crisis being the biggest one.

Previously, Minear told TVLine that emergency procedurals like 9-1-1 and its spinoff should address the real-life health crisis. He noted that this is something that cannot be ignored. For now, viewers have to wait and see when the second installment is coming to the small screen.

9-1-1: Lone Star season 2 is expected to premiere sometime in 2021 on Fox.
