China-Sweden motor-vehicle maker Lynk & Co. has started selling its latest compact sport utility vehicle in China. The Lynk 06 was built to meet the needs of millennials and the country's young urban population.

Lynk & Co, which is owned by China motor-vehicle company Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd, showed off the Lynk 06 at its dealerships Sunday. There are five different variants available with prices between 118,600 yuan ($17,364) and 158,600 yuan.

The Lynk 06 is the fifth model released by Geely's high-end Lynk & Co marque. According to the company, the model mainly targets younger China car buyers - such as generation Z consumers or those born after 1995.

It said the model was specifically designed and personalized to meet the needs and tastes of younger buyers. This includes the integration of modern technology and up-to-date design elements. As the smallest SUV in the company's line-up the Lynk 06 sports a sporty exterior expected to appeal to younger generations.

The compact SUV was built on Geely's B-segment compact BMA platform. This is the same platform used for Geely's Benue and ICON compact SUV models. To meet the expectations of more environmentally conscious buyers Lynk & Co gives consumers the option to choose between its gasoline-powered, hybrid and mild-hybrid powertrains.

Those who want a traditional gasoline-powered engine can opt to get the Lynk 06 with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The powertrain produces 130 kilowatts of power and 265 Newton meters of torque.

Environmentally conscious buyers can get the plug-in hybrid. This is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with an 82-horsepower electric motor and a ternary-lithium battery pack.

While China's car industry may have experienced an overall downturn Lynk & Co has reported growth during the past quarters. In August the company reported 56 percent year-on-year sales growth - selling around 17,098 units. During the first eight months of 2020 Lynk & Co sold 87,192 units for a 15.5 percent year-on-year increase.
