Netflix hasn't officially renewed or canceled Ratched season 2. The psychological-thriller drama starring Sarah Paulson has just debuted on the platform on Friday, Sept. 18. Viewers need to wait for a little while to see whether or not the streaming service picks up the series for another installment.

But, despite the lack of official renewal announcement, CarterMatt noted that Ratched season 2 will happen on Netflix. Reportedly, the series was given a two-season order when it was first given a green light. After all, it's a prequel to Ken Kesey's 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

The aforementioned outlet added that there's already a plan to film the second season, though it's unclear as to when it could be. Just like other shows out there, the series need to adjust with the production schedule due to the current global health crisis.

As for the potential release date of Ratched season 2, nothing is confirmed at the moment. There are a lot of uncertainties surrounding the future of the series. If ever, the series could return at some point in 2021. The first season has a total of eight episodes, but the new one is expected to have 10 episodes.

Meanwhile, Paulson will reprise her titular role Nurse Mildred Ratched in the latest installment. Other returning characters include Finn Wittrock as Edmund Tolleson, Sharon Stone as Lenore Osgood, Cynthia Nixon as Gwendolyn Briggs, Judy Davis as Nurse Betsy Bucket, Jon Jon Briones as Dr. Richard Hanover, Judy Davis as Nurse Betsy Bucket, and Charlie Carver as Huck Finnigan.

The first season ended with Ratched, Briggs, and Bucket in Mexico. However, the series wasn't meant to end this way. Nixon told OpraMag that season 1 wasn't going to be a happy ending, but series creators Ryan Murphy and Evan Romansky changed it.

Nixon revealed that a lot of characters were originally slated to die -- including Briggs. Yet, the plan wasn't followed and the show chose to go on an alternative path. In Ratched season 2, we could expect relationships between Ratched and Briggs, and Edmund and Charlotte to be further explored.

In addition, the new season sees the titular character getting closer to becoming the woman depicted in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. According to Paulson, they already have an end game to the story as they know it. Also, she hinted that Ratched's past might be addressed in the next chapter.

Paulson said her character is like a monolith, and it's almost like she's not a person at all. The actress made it clear that Mildred has yet to calcify into the cold figure seen in the novel. Now, it's interesting to see what would be her changes in Ratched season 2.
