Kate Middleton and Prince William met in the early 2000s. They started their relationship years after their first meeting.

Reports said that she went by her full name, Catherine Middleton. But, after being thrown into the royal spotlight, the public has since nicknamed her as "Kate."

Royal experts revealed that the Duchess of Cambridge does not like the nickname, according to the Daily Express. Several sources, also, told the experts that the young Catherine even wrote an "awkward" email to them, requesting to drop the nickname.

Kate Middleton said yes to Prince William's marriage proposal in 2010. But, two years, earlier, Sunday Express columnist Adam Helliker reported that there were "intriguing signs" that the young Catherine was already preparing for her future role in the British Monarchy.

Sources revealed that the now-Duchess "quietly informed" her friends that she would love to drop the "informal" nickname. She, also, asked them to call her in her full name, "Catherine."

Some friends of the future Queen Consort, later on, told Helliker that everyone knew what would happen between Kate and William. However, the email became a surprise to them, particularly the request.

Roya expert Daniela Elser explained, however, that the Duchess of Cambridge was "very jokey" when she sent the request. Despite the "gentleness" of her email, it still shocked her circles.

Amid all the talks about Kate Middleton's preferences when it comes to her nickname, Helliker revealed that everyone at Marlborough College called her Catherine. However, it all changed when she started attending university, where Prince William also attended.

Following all the speculations, Prince Charles' Press Secretary Paddy Harverson denied all the claims. But, this did not stop the public in believing that the Wales Prince had always called his wife "Kate."

These days, though, the speculations further strengthened its stance when the public learned what the Duchess uses in signing off her emails. Reports recalled that she uses her full name in official royal correspondence as she signs them with "C."

Cosmopolitan previously release a similar report about Kate Middleton and the controversy behind her nickname. The publication said that it has remained unknown whether the Duchess of Cambridge, indeed, sent an email containing her request to her circles of friends. It has remained unconfirmed, as well, whether she did it because of the alleged preparations for her future role.

Following the engagement, though, Clarence House announced the special milestone using the Duchess's full name, Catherine Middleton. After their wedding in 2011, she became Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.

But, as for her title when Prince William ascends to the British Throne, many believe that she will use the title, Queen. Although some reports have already deemed the title, "Queen Kate," there is a huge possibility that she will use "Queen Catherine" as her full name, reportedly, sound more "royal."
