Google hosts a virtual event where it launched its newest flagship phone, the 5G-enabled Google Pixel 5, ahead of the iPhone 12 release.

The launch of the 5G-Enabled Google Pixel 5 also marked the official entry of the Pixels into the 5G arena. The phone, along with other products like the Pixel 4a 5G, the revamped Google Home speaker, and the newly-redesigned Chromecast with Google TV, was recently unveiled in a virtual event. The event and the launch of the products, particularly the Pixel 5, preempted the mid-October launch of its rival, the iPhone 12.

The detailed specs of the 5G-Enabled Google Pixel 5 leaked out weeks ago, about the same time that rumors about a possible mid-October launch of iPhone 12 circulated. When Pixel 5 was finally revealed, it showed that the leaked information is closer to the truth, after all. As speculated weeks ago, Google Pixel 5 has a Snapdragon 765G chipset, which many say does not actually belong to the top-of-the-line chipset category. However, Google is not after the performance, but would rather prioritize other aspects like the ability of its camera to take top-quality photos.

Google said that the camera on its 5G-Enabled Google Pixel 5 uses computational photography technology to get high-resolution images. It also supports 4K recordings at 60 frames per second. In the case of the iPhone 12, which is set for launch in mid-October, its Pro Max model also features 4K video recording capability, albeit at a higher 240 frames per second.

The diagonal display size on the 5G-Enabled Google Pixel 5 is 6 inches with a 1080p+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. It is slightly larger than that of Pixel 4 at 5.7" and a bit smaller than the 6.3" display of the 4XL. Its rival from Apple, the iPhone 12 which is due for launch in mid-October, reportedly has a 6.67" OLED display with capacitive, multi-touch, touchscreen.

Perhaps the major change in the 5G-Enabled Google Pixel 5 is the included X52 modem on its Snapdragon 765G chipset which gives it 5G connectivity. Google revealed that Sub-6 is supported on all of its Pixel 5 versions and in some countries, the phone will also work seamlessly on mmWave networks. In the case of the iPhone 12, which is scheduled for unveiling in mid-October, some models have mmWave support while its other models are limited to Sub6GHz connectivity.

The 5G-Enabled Google Pixel 5 has a 4,080 mAh battery at 18W, which is also a huge improvement from the previous versions 3,700 mAh batteries. In the case of the iPhone 12, which Apple will unveil in mid-October, the batteries on its models vary with the standard iPhone 12 having a 2,227 mAh battery and the high-end iPhone 12 Pro Max featuring a 3,687 mAh battery. According to Google, the extra capacity battery along with its Snapdragon 765G chipset on its 5G-Enabled Google Pixel 5 will help the phone last longer.
