Sherlock season 5 has been teased several times already, but there are still no official updates whether or not the plan will, indeed, happen. The series has been off-air for over three years, with the fourth installment concluding in January 2017.

Details about Sherlock season 5 remain scarce until now. In a previous interview with Digital Spy, co-showrunner Steven Moffat said that they haven't thought about what's next for the series since his fellow creator Mark Gatiss is doing other stuff.

Back in January, Moffat teased that a fifth installment has been planned. But by the time season 4 aired, a final decision hadn't been made. Both Moffat and lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch have shown their interest in doing another installment, but no official plans were put in place.

Moffat noted that they haven't had a proper discussion about what they would do in the next installment. Still, the creators were looking into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories for further inspiration. If the plan will push through, fans speculated the show might be released in 2022 or 2023.

Cumberbatch is set to reprise his titular role once Sherlock season 5 arrives. The actor will be joined by Martin Freeman, who plays Watson. In addition, the previous installment introduced Sherlock's sister, Eurus Holmes (Sian Brooke), who he didn't remember existed.

Speaking to Express, Brooke said she's open to playing the character again if given a chance. The actress noted that Eurus is a character she would love to revisit. She's different than others since she doesn't respond or behave the way they do. There's still more to her that's worth exploring.

As for the potential plot of Sherlock season 5, the series will likely pick up the events that happened in the fourth season. Eurus was back in the confinements of her secure unit. The episode revealed that she's an expert manipulator and gets thrilled from taunting her detective brother.

ASherlock found out that Eurus killed his best friend "Redbeard." Also, he and Watson are still companions at the end of the previous installment and they'll remain partners moving forward in the next chapter. Both of them could have their own stories, as well.

Meanwhile, Sherlock season 5 has no trailer at the moment, given that the series hasn't officially confirmed as of yet. Trailers weren't usually dropped until a few months before the show is due to premiere. Hence, fans may need to wait for quite some time.
