The Handmaid's Tale season 4 picks up the massive cliffhanger at the end of the third installment. June (Elizabeth Moss) was shot while trying to distract the Gilead guard. It was initially believed the character died, but the previous trailer confirmed she's still alive.

June helped the children and Marthas escaped from Gilead by boarding a plane to Canada. She successfully assisted all of them, but she remained on the territory. Now, fans are hoping the character gets a chance to escape in The Handmaid's Tale season 4.

June wanted to leave so she could reunite with her daughter Nicole and husband Luke Bankole (O.T Fagbenle). However, she chose to stay in Gilead as she's desperate to reunite with her first daughter, Hannah. The child was taken from her when she was captured by the Gilead authorities.

It isn't surprising that June stayed and will only leave until she's with Hannah. Despite her previous failed attempts at a reunion, Moss hinted that a "happy ending" is on the cards. But then, the actress made it clear that it depends on how fans describe the word "happy."

Perhaps, June reunites with Hannah but they won't be able to leave Gilead. There's also a chance her daughter crosses the border to Canada but she's unable to follow her. This could be one of the major themes of The Handmaid's Tale season 4. It's interesting to see whether a reunion will, indeed, happen.

Meanwhile, Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) could betray June in the upcoming installment. He believes that she played a part in the death of his wife, Eleanor (Julie Dretzin). Now, he's seeking revenge and seemingly ready to break their alliance.

Speaking to TVLine, Whitford hinted that everything could blow up in the new season. While the actor didn't know where his character is going to land, he noted the situation makes it more terrifying for June. Danger might be closer to home than she realized.

The upcoming installment will introduce a new character, as well. It was confirmed that The Haunting of Hill House star Mckenna Grace is set to recur as Mrs. Keyes. The character is a farmer and a teenage wife of an older Commander.

As for the release date of The Handmaid's Tale season 4, nothing is confirmed as of this writing. Filming was shut down in March due to the current global health crisis and production in Toronto just recently. If there's no further setback, the series could return in 2021 on Hulu.
