Back in 2016, the coming of Shrek 5 was announced. However, four years after, nothing has come to fruition yet.
Rumors have it the fifth movie installment was already canceled, although some said there was no truth about it. According to Devdiscourse, the film got confirmation and had been in the pre-production process for a long time now.
The upcoming movie is said to complete the franchise that started in 2001. It is supposed to be out in 2019. But the year comes and goes, Shrek and the rest of the gang haven't graced the silver screen yet.
Now, Shrek 5 has a new release date and it may finally come out in September 2022. The production may begin later this year, and it may have a new plot and theme.
It will also have a new writer with Michael McCullers. The first and second movies' producer and executive producer Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed the franchise is set to have five movies.
Even before the first film's release, Katzenberg and other people behind the movie talked about the series' whole story. Each chapter will answer the questions about the first movie that will give fans a deeper insight into its story.
Fans will continuously see Shrek and Donkey having more adventures in Shrek 5. There are rumors that everyone will be using modern gadgets here, so fans may see the triples using smartphones.

However, Screenrant noted there are speculations Shrek 5 would not be a film sequel but a reboot. As the original movie was out in 2001, there seemed to be a common practice in Hollywood that there would be a reboot after 20 years of a film's release.
But, with the perfection of the franchise's storyline, does it ever need a reboot at all? Also, what part of the movie will have a reboot? Anyhow, fans shall only take these assumptions with a grain of salt as nothing has been confirmed yet.
