Daniel Chalmers, a pastor from North Carolina who was accused of urinating on a woman while she was asleep on board a flight, has resigned from his Raleigh church, local news reported.
The woman, 25-year old Alicia Beverly, has sued Chalmers and his church in a multimillion-dollar lawsuit following the incident earlier this month, court records showed.
Beverly's lawyer Geoffrey Fieger filed damages claims against Chalmers and the church for more than $2 million. She said she "woke up feeling something warm on her body" on the plane at around 2.45 a.m. to find the pastor urinating on her during a Delta flight from Las Vegas to Detroit on Oct. 13.
Chalmers, a pastor at Love Win Ministries which he founded, "expressed grief and horror" over the incident, the Charlotte Observer reported quoting a statement by Catch the Fire Raleigh-Durham church pastors.
According to Beverly, she jumped up and saw the pastor's "private area out and I screamed and that woke everybody up," Insider quoted her as on Fox 2 Detroit News. "I see him shake himself off and I'm like this man just peed on me! I looked and there's a puddle of pee in the seats!" she added.
Flight attendants questioned the pastor. "I peed on her. I thought I was going to the bathroom," Daily Mail quoted the attendants saying.
Airport police said they smelled alcohol on the pastor who had "bloodshot eyes and a small, visually apparent wet spot" on his shorts, Daily Mail added.
When Chalmers was confronted by senior church leaders the pastor claimed that he was horrified "over his actions and the effects on his fellow passenger."
Beverly has experienced "injuries and damages" including severe mental and emotional distress and humiliation because of the incident.
Beverly's lawyer claims Chalmers had a blood alcohol content above 0.17 when the Detroit police took him into custody after the plane landed. In Michigan, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher.
