Fans have been waiting for more news about Bodyguard season 2, but details about the police political-thriller series remain scarce until now. Filming hasn't started at the moment and there is no clear indication as to what the future holds for the story.
According to CarterMatt, Bodyguard season 2 hasn't been officially renewed. Yet, it wasn't canceled, either. There's still a hope that the series will happen at some point, though it's just a matter of when. At the moment, some cast members were busy with their other projects.
For instance, lead star Richard Madden, who plays David Budd, is seemingly busy with his upcoming superhero film, Eternals. Series creator Jed Mercurio is also doing Line of Duty season 6, which is currently in production. Their schedules may have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well.
Previously, Madden revealed that he and Mercurio discussed their plans for Bodyguard season 2. During an event in Los Angeles organized by Netflix, the actor teased that the series creator was planning to give the series a couple of years to make something happen.
At the time, Madden said he'll catch up with Mercurio again "after 18 months." Thus, there is a long wait before seeing something happen in the series. Because of the current global health crisis, the wait might be longer than expected.
While there are a lot of uncertainties surrounding Bodyguard season 2, fans were optimistic it is happening. For now, it all depends on the schedule and the availability of those involved. BBC is also invested in making more of it, especially since the first installment received numerous award nominations.
The series follows a Scottish Afghanistan war veteran and Specialist Protection Officer at Protection Command, David Budd. He was assigned as a bodyguard to an ambitious and powerful Home Secretary, Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes).
Budd's life became twisted after Montague died in a terrorist bombing. He was framed for the murder of the Home Secretary. While trying to prove his innocence and clear his name, he started unraveling a complex conspiracy that involves police corruption, as well as an organized crime.
In addition to Madden, the series also stars Sophie Rundle as Vicky Budd, Vincent Franklin as Mike Travis, Nicholas Gleaves as Roger Penhaligon, David Westhead as John Vosler, Paul Ready as Rob MacDonald, Gina McKee as Anne Sampson, Pippa Haywood as Lorraine Craddock, Nina Toussaint-White as Louise Rayburn, and Ash Tandon as Deepak Sharma.
